Fourhundred years after the discovery of Galileo, thanks to the achievements in science, etc etc etc
Therefore the Unesco has declared the year 2009 to be dedicated to astronomy.
To celebrate and contribute to the International Year of Astronomy, the
LOWLANDS ASTRONOMY FESTIVAL 2009
is an invitation to amateurs and professionals worldwide, to participate in an international social, practical and theoretical happening and gathering, related and dedicated to the broad diversity of the infinite ways of practising the oldest science on earth: astronomy!
The Astrofestival combines science, fascination, demonstrations, competitions and fun into a public event taking place one evening in November each year. The festival is held at XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX, and presents activities suitable for all age groups.
The Astrofestival is designed to draw attention to science and technology as a part of our culture, as a source of leisure time activities and as a reservoir of fascinating experiments and demonstrations. This will lead to an increased interest in science and technology and stimulate the recruitment to such careers in the long run.
The bulk of the activities are connected to astronomy and space science but a number of exhibitors present the natural sciences in general.
The festival also features The planet field, a unique true scale light model of the solar system covering 500 meters of the area. The model, shining in the dark, includes all the planets and the sun. The public is guided in groups through the model, getting a surprising perspective on the size of the solar system.
New activities this year are; an astronaut simulator, based on a gyro, where visitors can try to control a spinning space craft. A competition where children will build miniature space suits. A space probe workshop.
In addition, adults and youth can see space movies, listen to lectures, see celestial objects through telescopes, walk barefooted on the surface of Mercury (glowing hot coal), join a lottery with astronomy prizes or visit the astrobasar and buy a real meteorite. Children can also attend The space hunt.
The space hunt is a competition where children use a light stick to go by a map and find questions distributed on the festival area. In addition to answering the questions they must also find a number of aliens and identify them them. The aliens are dressed up role-players.
The Astrofestival caters approximately 10000 visitors during 5 hours, offers 20 activities and 25 exhibitors, and more then 200 people are busy taking care of the public. There are also open restaurants, a real hot air balloon, helicopter landing, and fireworks, adding atmosphere to the event.
